All teams play at 5pm.  I’ve still got some straggling teams that may not make it.  So we are going to plan to hit all fields at 5pm and blow it up kick ball style!

I’ll let you know who is playing who as soon as I get definite confirmations from teams.  So confirm, people.  Confirm!

Here’s some things I like about fall ball:

finally this t-shirt, made by Tribe One, designed by Stewart Pack from the original patch by Katie Ries.

This designed by Katie Ries. Check out urbanlandscouts.com.

a real ball field

a place for your kids to free range

There’s more stuff I like about fall ball but we’ll get to that later.  Check out the previous post for registration forms, rules and what is that insurance thing exactly.

Thanks!

Citizen Up, Knoxville.

State and local elections are happening now.

The primary is important, especially in the mayoral election.  If a candidate takes 50% plus 1 of the vote, then that candidate wins the election.  If that happens, you will not have another opportunity to voice your opinion for which person you’d like to have represent the City of Knoxville for Mayor.   If you are thinking that you’ll just chill until November and then vote for Mayor, you might not be afforded the opportunity.  These folks running for this office are in it to win it and they are focused on September 27.   If you aren’t registered to vote, you must register next week (by August 29) in order to be eligible to vote in the primary.  Early voting begins on September 7th.

The primary election could decide your Mayor and also your Municipal Judge.  Judge Rosson is running unopposed so you can focus on the Mayoral race.

Voting for City Council is more traditional.  The top two candidates from the primary move on to the general election.  There’s a lot going on with the City Council candidates regarding their agendas.  I’d recommend meeting these folks.  They are very present and willing to discuss issues, concerns, and the weather with you.  On my forum journey through this election cycle, I’ve found them all to be very personable.  Although holding a position on City Council may not seem as sexy as being Mayor, it’s extremely important.  It’s the legislative body for the city.

Now to the State Senate.  Jamie Woodson vacated her seat and we are now electing our 6th District Senator.  Like City Council, this election is with a primary to determine the candidates for the general election.  The Knoxville Chamber hosted a well attended Mayoral Debate televised on WBIR during the prime time hour of 8pm in July.  It was a big deal.  Last Thursday, they hosted a Senate Debate at the Square Room at 8am that was broadcast on WNOX’s radio show with Hallerin Hilton Hill.  It was *not* such a big deal.  I’m not blaming the Knoxville Chamber.  I’m blaming me and maybe you.  I did go on Thursday but I was already up since school started last week and 2/3 of my girl house are attending it.  If I hadn’t had to get up so early, it’s unlikely I would have attended the debate.  I haven’t attended any other functions related to the Senate race.  I’m pretty entrenched with local politics right now so my view might be narrow but there doesn’t seem to be as much interest in the Senate race overall.  I’m sure that’s why these folks had to debate at 8am.  I certainly haven’t given it the attention it deserves but I’m paying attention now.  Out of the three candidate’s up there, I thought I knew who I would favor in my opinion.  My assumption was wrong.  I’m glad I went.  The Knoxville Chamber Senate Debate included only the Republican candidates.  Gloria Johnson, local Democratic Chair, threw her hat in the ring last week.  She’s the only Dem running and wasn’t included in the debate since she’s unopposed on that ticket.  Gloria is a school teacher and it was the first week back so she might have had to decline anyway.  Knox is the 7th District as well.  That seat is held by Stacey Campfield.  Things of interest happening with TN state legislation ~  the recent vote to end collective bargaining by teachers and that ‘Don’t Say Gay’ thing that was pushed by Campfield.  I think this Senate election is a pretty important.  You might consider looking into Lt. Governor, Ron Ramsey from District 2.  He’s not from our area so it’s not about your vote.  It is about overall politics in TN.  You might google Ron Ramsey and coal.  I would strongly recommend looking into state politics.  I feel like this quote sent to me by good friend particularly applies, “The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”  Plato. I’m not saying any of these people are evil but I am saying apathy doesn’t serve our community.

You probably know this.  I’m voting for Madeline Rogero for Mayor.  I’m part time on her campaign staff but that’s not why I’m voting for her.  I’m voting for her because I believe she’s the best choice for the way I want my city to be run.  I can elaborate for you in person if you like.  Really though, I’d like to encourage you to attend debates, forums and meet-n-greets with all of these candidates so you can make an informed decision for your own bad self.  Then vote.  For real.  Vote.

Kickball, potlucks and campaigning

We’ve got one more kickball game left for the season!  It’s Sunday July 24.  The games generally run from 5-7pm.  We are going to potluck at my house following the kickball domination at the Knoxville Botanical Garden and discuss the fall season.

IF YOU WANT IN, come to the Knoxville Botanical Gardens on Sunday from 5-7pm.  We’ll be taking new teams for the fall.  You don’t have to have a team, you can join a team.  It’s inclusive.  Be aware that this league’s primary goal is to have fun.  It’s not a professional league.  I wouldn’t even call it an amateur league.  It’s like a back yard league.

In other news, I’m on the campaign trail for Madeline Rogero with my neighbor and general working partner Paige Travis.  Need a t-shirt?  Need a yard sign?  We can set you up.  I’m working on an art auction for Madeline that will take place at the Gallery Lofts downtown for First Friday August 5.  If you’ve got some brilliant art you’d like to donate, let me know.  If you’d like to be invited, let me know.  Madeline Rogero is going to make a great mayor because of her experience, her thoughtfulness and her commitment to making Knoxville the most livable, vibrant and sustainable city in the country.  Her vision and her background to make her vision a reality is unparalleled.  I sincerely hope that you will vote for her on September 27.

Word up.

Happy Father’s Day…and what’s to be done about kickball?

It appears that many players won’t take the field today in honor of their fathers or of themselves for being fathers.  Hey!  That’s cool.  I propose that for those of us who can, we hit the field and scrimmage if nothing else.  If there’s a powerful storm, we’ll skip it.  We are off for the next two weeks and don’t resume until July 10.  We’ll have to do a makeup day or a double header or something to get our full season of fun.

So I’ll see those willing and able at 5pm at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens.  If the skies are angry, we’ll try again later.

Here’s a picture of my dad and my daughters.  They don’t play kickball but I’m okay with that.  Check out my dad’s website ~ www.earlycoloniallongguns.com.  I’m really proud of him.
